Reading a Lipid Panel

Interpret a standard lipid panel by separating what the analyzer measures from what is calculated, verify the calculation behind LDL-C and non-HDL-C, and recognize when triglycerides are too high for a calculated LDL-C result to be reported.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the roles of total cholesterol, HDL-C, triglycerides, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and apolipoprotein B in a lipid panel
  • Identify which lipid panel results are measured and which are calculated, and state the main limitation of each calculation equation
  • Recognize how fasting status, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and specimen handling affect which lipid results can be reported
