Map the audit without moving the guardrails

Use a category map before selecting a project. My Green Lab categories can be one scoping aid for cold storage, plug load, large equipment, infrastructure energy, water, sustainable purchasing, and recycling or waste reduction; they do not govern the audit. Local risk, quality, method, and constraint owners decide what belongs in scope.

For each category, record the baseline and the governing constraint. CLIA requires the laboratory to define, monitor, and document conditions essential to proper specimen and reagent storage, consistent with manufacturer instructions where provided. CAP-facing evidence can include a current Chemical Hygiene Plan, waste-disposal documentation, and environmental-monitoring records.

Separate direct savings from a result that may be affected by the change. A meter can measure kWh, but it cannot establish specimen stability or analytical equivalence. Name the owner who can supply that evidence before you score the opportunity. The useful audit boundary is the work system, including its quality records and approval path.

Audit categories and the evidence to collect locally.
CategoryObservable baselineConstraint to verify
Cold storagekWh/day, setpoint, inventoryvalidated stability and storage instructions
Watervolume, resistivity, TOC trendfitness for intended procedure
Wasteweight or pickups by streamOSHA and local EHS categories
PurchasingSKU, packaging, expiry lossvalidated method fitness and formulary

Use the same sequence for each audit category.

  1. Scope

Choose a work stream and identify local policy, method, and safety constraints.

  2. Baseline

Collect a numeric use, cost, volume, or waste baseline with the time period.

  3. Screen

Check manufacturer instructions, validation status, CLIA, biosafety, EHS, and purchasing requirements.

  4. Score

Compare impact, feasibility, risk, evidence, and a balancing measure.

  5. Test

Assign an owner, target, follow-up date, and rollback trigger before a limited pilot.
