Required section · Section 1 of 6
The laboratory problem behind the waste stream
A red bag that contains clean packaging is not a safer red bag. It is an overclassified waste stream that requires specialized collection, treatment, and vendor handling. The audit question is not simply what can be recycled or discarded. It is where the laboratory can reduce energy, water, materials, and waste while holding biosafety and released-result quality in place.
Start with observable work. A ULT freezer, analyzer water feed, reagent lot packaging, courier shipment, fume hood, and regulated-waste container each expose a different operating cost and different constraint. OSHA requires contaminated sharps to go directly into closable, puncture-resistant, leakproof containers at point of use. State, local, and facility policy determine the exact regulated-medical-waste categories and color coding.
A sustainability audit is not permission to relax storage, QC, containment, or method requirements. A change that saves electricity but creates a temperature excursion, a QC shift, or delayed turnaround time has not succeeded. Use savings as an intended measure and quality, safety, and workload as balancing measures. Begin by observing a real work stream and its constraint before proposing a greener alternative.
