How the practice exam works

What each timed mock covers

Every timed mock has 100 questions. The areas follow the ranges in the MLS content guideline revised June 9, 2026:

• Immunology, Laboratory Operations and Urinalysis share 20 questions, 6, 7 and 7, and which one gets 6 changes from mock to mock.
• No area comes up more than twice in a row.
• A mock never holds two versions of the same question or two questions built on the same calculation.
• Timed mocks draw from their own set of questions, so a mock never repeats what you met in practice or daily review.

The readiness band

A timed mock ends with one of three bands:

• At or above the simulated standard
• Near the simulated standard
• Below the simulated standard

How the band is worked out:

1. Each question has a difficulty, so the same number of right answers means more on a harder set of questions.
2. From your right answers and the difficulty of each question, the site estimates your ability and how sure that estimate is.
3. When the estimate gives at least an 80% chance that your ability is at or above the simulated standard, the band is At or above. At 20% or less, it is Below. In between, it is Near.

The results page draws the range your answers support beside the standard, with no numbers on it.

As a guide, on a typical mock 56 or fewer right answers gives Below, 57 to 64 gives Near, and 65 or more gives At or above. The exact numbers move a little with each mock's questions.

This band compares your answers with a standard set on LatticeMLS's own question bank. It does not predict your exam result.

The adaptive exam

The adaptive exam follows the same blueprint as a timed mock, with 100 questions in 150 minutes. The questions are chosen as you go:

1. The first question sits at the simulated standard.
2. After each answer, the site updates its estimate of your ability.
3. The next question comes from the area furthest behind its share of the blueprint, picked at random from the five questions nearest your estimate.

Your first answer to each question decides what comes next. You can still change answers on the Review screen, and your results use your final answers. If time runs out first, each question not reached counts as a wrong answer of that area's middle difficulty.

Question difficulty and the Beta label

Each question's difficulty starts as an editor's estimate on a five-step scale. Timed mocks and adaptive exams submitted with anonymous statistics on move it. Each answered question's difficulty moves a small step toward what that answer showed. The exam needs at least 10 answers, and an answer counts when it took from 5 seconds to 20 minutes. Practice sets never move a difficulty. The band carries aBeta label because those estimates are still being refined.

Question difficulties are editorial estimates that are refined as learners answer. Your band may shift as the estimates improve.

Practice questions are written for LatticeMLS. They are not questions from any certification examination.
