Write an Objective That Can Be Observed
Use an observable action verb with the full performance statement, not a verb alone. Recognize, calculate, correlate, select, troubleshoot, explain, and evaluate can be useful when the content and expected evidence are explicit. Understand, learn, and be familiar with do not identify what a person will do. In ABCD terms, state the audience, behavior, condition, and degree.
The repaired objective is: Given a control lot and the current acceptance range posted at the workstation, the operator will run the control, record the result, and correctly classify it as acceptable or unacceptable. The condition gives the tools and reference. The degree makes the expected performance reviewable. A local program may use a documented evidence rule with a stated rationale; no universal number of attempts is set here.
Manage cognitive load by refreshing only the prerequisite needed for the decision, sequencing simple before complex work, and grouping each procedure stage. Remove strip-chemistry history and software architecture when they do not help an operator classify a control, so limited time stays on evidence tied to the target capability and patient-facing decision. A complete worked example can reduce unproductive search for a novice, then guidance should fade as skill grows. If an item does not prepare or test the objective, remove it from this unit.
| Element | Original draft | Repaired unit |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Nursing staff | New point-of-care operators |
| Behavior | Understand | Run, record, classify |
| Condition | Not stated | Control lot and posted range |
| Degree | Not stated | Documented local evidence rule with stated rationale |
| Claim about performance | Useful evidence | What a quiz alone misses |
|---|---|---|
| Can run a control | Direct observation and record review | Sequence and handling |
| Can classify a result | Displayed result and decision rationale | Action under stated conditions |
| Can maintain a test system | Maintenance observation and records | Actual instrument operation |
