A low hemoglobin is the opening problem

An adult outpatient EDTA specimen was drawn at 09:55 and CBC released at 10:35; it is not hemolyzed. Hemoglobin is 8.4 g/dL against a local adult interval of 12.0–16.0 g/dL. Confirm patient age, sex, physiologic context, local interval, specimen stability, transfusion, therapy, and timing before attaching a mechanism.

The absolute reticulocyte count (ARC) is the primary measure of marrow response: RBC count × reticulocyte fraction, reported as × 10^9/L. A reticulocyte percentage alone can appear normal in anemia because its denominator is reduced. This instructional case assumes the CBC and reticulocyte measurement are from the same stable specimen before treatment or transfusion.
