A microcytic result is a pattern

An adult outpatient CBC shows hemoglobin 94 g/L, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) 72 fL, and red cell distribution width (RDW) 17.8%. The analyzer flags microcytosis and anisocytosis. Microcytosis is a pattern, not a diagnosis, so the question is which combination of CBC, smear, iron studies, and context best separates the plausible patterns.

Interpret MCV beside hemoglobin, RBC count, RDW, peripheral smear, and iron studies. Iron deficiency and thalassemia trait are common causes, but inflammation, sideroblastic processes, and lead-related findings remain relevant look-alikes. A low MCV alone does not release a disease label.
