Required section · Section 5 of 6
Choose the recollection path and the fill order
You are handed the 07:23 case: an edematous finger site, a clotted EDTA tube, and a short-filled, hemolyzed lithium-heparin tube, with a CBC and a basic chemistry panel still needed. The ordering exercise below asks you to place four containers for a new capillary draw in the correct technical order when capillary collection is selected under the current procedure.
This decision applies the capillary order-of-draw model from the mental-model section and the specimen-integrity reasoning behind it. It does not ask you to choose a recollection route; that choice follows the current local procedure, patient condition, and authorized escalation pathway.
The ordering exercise below asks you to sequence four containers for a new capillary draw. Get your first placement in before checking the correct order, since the value of the exercise is in seeing where your own sequence differs from the supported one and why that difference matters for specimen quality. The right recollection route and the right fill order are both decisions you can defend with a specific reason, not habits performed the same way regardless of the specimen in front of you.

Ordering exercise
A new capillary draw needs a blood gas specimen, an EDTA microcontainer, a lithium-heparin microcontainer, and a serum microcontainer. Place the four containers in the correct technical fill order.
1. Serum microcontainer
Nonadditive tube, filled last in the technical sequence.
2. Lithium-heparin microcontainer
For basic chemistry; also needs immediate gentle mixing.
3. EDTA microcontainer
For the CBC and differential; needs immediate gentle mixing.
4. Blood gas specimen
Capillary blood gas microcontainer, sensitive to exposure and delay.
