Guided example

The data table establishes anemia and microcytosis against the stated 30-month intervals. The ARC is within its pediatric interval, so the laboratory does not describe an increased regenerative response. The red-cell count is within interval, the RDW is increased, and platelets are mildly increased; none is diagnostic alone.

Low ferritin supports depleted stores, and CRP was not elevated at collection. Together with increased RDW and low locally interpreted Ret-He, the evidence supports iron-restricted erythropoiesis. The red-cell count and smear pattern leave a coexisting hemoglobinopathy in the differential; chronic blood loss remains clinical context to investigate, not a CBC conclusion.

No basophilic stippling is seen. Stippling is nonspecific and may be absent in lead exposure, so it neither confirms nor excludes exposure. The smear is supporting morphology, not a lead test.

Rank low ferritin, inflammatory context, RDW, and locally interpreted Ret-He above a single nonspecific smear feature.
